“Ground yourself.”
“Be more present.”
“Just breathe.”
People say these things like they’re simple.
Like presence is just a decision.
But if you’ve been carrying stress, trauma, or grief for a long time, grounding isn’t a quick fix.
Presence can feel dangerous to a body that’s used to bracing for impact.
So if you’ve tried meditation and it made you feel worse,
If you’ve tried deep breathing and it left you panicked instead of calm—
You’re not doing it wrong.
Your nervous system is just trying to protect you.
True grounding isn’t about “calming down.”
It’s about returning to a sense of safety, slowly, with care.
Here’s what grounding can look like:
-
Placing your hands on your thighs and feeling the weight of your body supported by the chair.
-
Noticing the texture of something—your mug, your blanket, your jeans.
-
Pressing your feet into the floor and saying silently: “I am here. I am safe enough right now.”
Sometimes, grounding isn’t stillness at all.
It’s movement.
It’s humming.
It’s walking slowly and letting your eyes rest on something beautiful.
Your body knows what you need.
It’s just waiting for you to notice.
At Avalon, we help you make space for this kind of repair.
Not through force, but through relationship—
with your body, your story, your self.
Warmly,
Karen
