The Conversation Every Couple Needs—But Few Ever Have

by | Jul 10, 2025 | Somatic Therapy

Why is This So Hard?

Why do we argue about the dishes, the calendar, the parenting, the bedtime routines, the money, the way he talks to you when he’s annoyed?

It’s rarely about what it’s about.

Beneath the logistics, the tone, the silence, the sighs—is a deeper misalignment:

A Deeper Misalignment

We don’t always share the same values for the relationship.

And often, we’ve never even been asked:

  • What do I value in a partnership?

  • What kind of partner do I want to be?

  • What kind of relationship do I want to help build?

Without that clarity, we stumble.
We assume.
We resent.
We hurt each other.
We try to get our needs met without knowing how to ask.

Moving Beyond Surviving to Thriving

If we want to stop just surviving the relationship and start thriving together, this is the conversation that changes things.

It starts here:

  • Why do I really want to be in a relationship?

  • Do I want a spouse and children—or do I want to be a spouse and parent?

  • What do I most value about coupleship?

  • How do I want to feel with my partner? How do I want them to feel with me?

  • What roles feel meaningful and fulfilling to me?

  • At the end of my life, what do I want my partner to say about being loved by me? What do I want to be able to say about loving them?

Aligning Values in a Relationship

A relationship doesn’t need two people who are exactly alike.
But it does need two people willing to examine what matters most—and share that honestly.

From that place, we can work as teammates. We can align our actions with our values. And we can build something real, lasting, and beautiful.

A Practice: Share Your “Why”

Find a quiet time and space—alone or with your partner—to reflect on this question:

Why do I want to be in this relationship?

Not the surface answer.
The deep one.

What is the experience you’re longing for?
What kind of life do you hope to create together?

Let that truth come forward—and then (gently) give it voice.

What values do I want to guide me in my relationship? Where have I been living out of alignment with those values—and what small shift could I make this week to return to what matters most?

At Avalon, we help women reconnect with what matters most in their relationships—starting from within.

Hey there!

You don’t have to keep being hard on yourself.

You don’t have to lie awake with worry.
You don’t have to feel stuck forever in a past that keeps pulling you away from the present.

Somatic therapy works where your hurt lives—
deep in the body,
where tension, memories, and old patterns have taken root.

Together, we’ll create the safety your body needs
to release what it’s been holding.

You deserve peace.
You deserve confidence.
You deserve joy.
