Where Does Anxiety Come From, Anyway?

Where Anxiety Really Comes From

Anxiety doesn’t come out of nowhere.
It’s not a personality flaw or a broken brain.

In fact, it’s a very normal human biological response to real or perceived danger.

For the record, this danger can be physical, but I find it’s most often about relationships:

We are terrified of rejection and abandonment by… well, everyone.

Wired for Connection

We came into the world wired for connection.
We needed comfort, safety, and someone to help us make sense of our feelings.

When those needs were met, our bodies learned:

I can relax. It’s ok to make mistakes. It’s ok to have big feelings.

But for many of us, those needs weren’t met consistently.
Not necessarily because our parents didn’t care—they may have been overwhelmed, distracted, or struggling themselves.

Still, our bodies got the message:

  • If I make a mistake, I will be rejected. Stay alert.

  • I need to change who I am to be accepted. Watch out.

  • My feelings are too much. I’m a problem.

How We Adapted

We adapted in the only way we could:

  • We stayed on guard.

  • We kept scanning for signs of danger.

  • We learned to make others’ feelings and needs more important than our own.

And it worked.

It kept us safe then.

But These Strategies Stay With Us

Here’s the problem:
These strategies stay with us.

They are the toolkit for living we bring into adulthood.

The scary beliefs wired into our body keep right on believing.
The alarm keeps going off.

This is why anxiety feels so persistent—because it’s not about the “Life Thing” we’re worrying about today.
It’s about the old, stored belief: I’m not safe unless I’m on guard.

The Good News: We Are Designed to Heal

We are designed to heal.
Our nervous system has built-in processes for repair—we just need to know how to work with them.

That’s the essence of somatic therapy:

Engaging the body’s natural capacity for healing so we can release anxiety’s grip and rediscover Peaceful Being.

The Power of Turning Toward Ourselves

When we learn how to turn toward our anxious feelings—our scared parts—and treat them with tenderness,
we begin to give our vulnerable selves the loving care we needed but didn’t get.

We can finally receive the message:

I am seen. I am safe. I am loved.

A Practice: Offering Yourself What You Needed Then

  1. Close your eyes and imagine yourself at the age when you first remember feeling anxious, unseen, or on your own.

  2. Picture yourself walking toward that younger you—noticing her posture, her expression, what she might be feeling.

  3. Offer her something simple:

    • A blanket.

    • A hand to hold.

    A quiet voice that says:

“You’re safe with me now. You don’t have to do this alone anymore.”

  4. Stay with her for a moment.
Let your body feel what it’s like to offer that kind of safety.

This is how we begin to rewrite the story.

Hey there!

You don’t have to keep being hard on yourself.

You don’t have to lie awake with worry.
You don’t have to feel stuck forever in a past that keeps pulling you away from the present.

Somatic therapy works where your hurt lives—
deep in the body,
where tension, memories, and old patterns have taken root.

Together, we’ll create the safety your body needs
to release what it’s been holding.

You deserve peace.
You deserve confidence.
You deserve joy.

Let’s start now.
